South Africa has officially recorded a total of over 1 million cases of COVID-19.

On Sunday evening, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize released an update as regards the culminative: “Today, we have breached one million cumulative cases of COVID-19 in South Africa, with a cumulative total of 1 004 413 cases reported.”

“Regrettably, today we report 214 COVID-19  related deaths: Eastern Cape 123, Gauteng 17, KwaZulu Natal 13, Northern Cape 5 and Western Cape 56. This brings the total to 26 735 deaths,” he added.

A surge in COVID has caused restrictions on how people celebrate during this festive season, as it’s become obvious that South Africa is experiencing a second wave.

SAMA head Angelique Coetzee reacted to the current situation of COVID in the country: “The majority of young people especially that do not listen … they need to [be] held accountable. So if they are not wearing their masks when they go into shopping centers, they then need to do community service [or] to pay a fine. That is something we need to look at.”
