‘Nobody Cares About The Manager’- Thierry Henry Speaks Out

Ahead of his first match in charge of Montreal Impact Thierry Henry insists players and fans do not care about the coach and admits he was the same during his playing career.

Henry is looking to kickstart his coaching career in Major League Soccer after a disappointing and short stint in charge of Monaco last season.

The former Arsenal forward, who is well versed with MLS having spent just over four years with New York Red Bulls, leads his team for the first time in a league match against New England Revolution as the season gets back underway this weekend.

The 42-year-old made the transition from player to the dugout by coaching Arsenal’s youth teams before working as an assistant to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

When it was put to him players only care about themselves and he was asked how that is different for coaches, Henry admitted he was of a similar mindset as a player.

“They should [care about themselves] at the end of the day. I didn’t care about my coach, I cared about what he could do for me, what he could do for the team but I never cared about him,” Henry told TSN.

“I never went to see my coach and said: ‘how are you?’. You just don’t. Fans don’t care about the coach, press don’t care about the coach, players don’t care about the coach.

“They want to know why they didn’t play, why the tactics weren’t right or whatever but you don’t really want to know about the human being that the coach can be. I think that’s the way it is, you accept it and that’s how it is.

“As a coach you deal with everyone’s problems and that’s how it is. You have to solve them, not many people want to know about yours but that’s the way it is, you have to take it on the chin and carry on.”
