As for Coldplay, they begin each album with a predetermined title that serves as a roadmap for the entire project, from songwriting and production to aesthetics. Bassist Guy Berryman tells Apple Music that understanding what they’re attempting to create in the studio helps them be more focused in the studio.
Without architectural plans, “you would just start heaping bricks on top of one other when erecting a building.” This planning was especially useful in the event of a global pandemic that paralyzed the world.
Their previous album, Everyday Life, had a clear vision for how it would sound on a massive scale without the usual world tour. So, the band knew exactly what they wanted to do with the songs they recorded for it.
“Orphans” from Everyday Life served as a test run for the band’s upcoming album, which they knew was going to be called Music of the Spheres and produced by Swedish super-producer Max Martin (who is not related to frontman Chris Martin).
Because of his talent and the personality of everyone in the studio, everything came together perfectly, according to Berryman. “We had planned on playing in large stadiums,” says the band.
