Akwaboah has shared his opinion on Amakye Dede crowning Kuami Eugene the next King of Highlife at 2019 VGMAs and stated that the whole thing was a sham.
In an interview with Kwaku Manu, the award-winning Highlife singer and songwriter asserted that the legendary Amakye Dede was forced to crown Kuami Eugene as the closest thing to the Highlife greats in the new generation.
Being the brain behind Becca’s hits like Daa k3 Daa and Sarkodie’s highly rated Mary album, Akwaboah will definitely go down as one of the great Highlife singers and songwriters of his time.
The musician and former signee of Sarkodie’s Sarkcess music mentioned that although Kuami Eugene is doing great in his own right, he is not the Highlife King like that gesture at the 2019 VGMAs made it seem.
”Kuami Eugene is my son. I played a major role in his journey as an artiste. I was a voice coach on the MTN Hitmaker show training him and the likes of Kidi and Kurl Songz. So to crown him as the Highlife King is not correct. Besides, the likes of Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, and Kofi B were still active at that time. I think Uncle Amakye Dede was forced to do it because he would definitely not bring a crown from home to do that on stage. Probably, the organizers had a part to play in all that”, Akwaboah said.
On the other hand, the soulful singer expressed his admiration and gratitude towards everyone who has played a role in his journey.
He singled out Sarkodie and stated that regardless of how people thought he was undermined and stalled by his former label he will always be grateful to Sarkodie for his contribution to where he is today.
”I still have a great relationship with Sarkodie. I feel artiste should learn to appreciate whoever played a role in their career no matter how small. God blesses people with a grateful heart”, the musician added.
